Nowadays, the body positive movement is one of the most popular topics in the internet. Some claim that it helps people to accept and love their bodies, increasing self-esteem in a superficial society that impose their beauty standards to all women/men without exceptions.
Indeed, it may be good to understand that everyone is different, and that it's harmful for us to pursue those ridiculous beauty standards. But in the other hand, for me, it's bad to normalize and say that it's 'ok' to accept every type of body, even when it's not healthy.
Some will call it "fat-shaming", but my intentions are far away from making fun of obesity. I'm not saying that obese people should be ashamed of the way they are, but certainly, they shouldn't be proud or happy with a disease that has become a widespread disease. It's not about the image, it's about people's health. We cannot support the acceptation of obesity as it's not dangerous or unhealthy for people.
Some arguments of the body positive movement about the acceptation of obesity and overweight people are that people should be able to choose the way they want to live without shame. But I think that it's an extreme liberal conception about people's health and I can't agree with that. I've heard similar commentaries about the regulations of junk food (people should be not restricted or crippled when they're buying junk food) and I think it's the same thing, we cannot be comfortable with something that is dangerous for the children and people in general.
For that reason, I think that obesity should be taken as a serious topic that has to be resolved as the disease it is, and not be ignored and accepted as a normal situation. The health problems that obesity can cause are undeniable, and is up to us to act and stop it.

ResponderEliminarHi Claudia again. Is a plesure reading your blog as always. Today we talked about a controversial topic, the obesity. I agree with you, the obesity should be taken as a serious topic, in this way we will be contributing to see this as a true disease. And like any disease, we can attack it.
ResponderEliminarHello mates, How are you?, I agree with about obesity is topic that to needs to be taken seriously by society.
ResponderEliminarI agree with you, people distort the "body positive". That really means loving yourself and loving yourself is wanting to have a physical and mental well-being.
